Cancun Sunset ~ Canon 30d

Even after all this time,
the sun never says to the earth,"You owe me."
Look what happens with a love like that.
It lights the whole sky.

~ Hafiz

I shot this amazing scene last week while on a rare vacation to Cancun, Mexico to celebrate Thanksgiving. It was a treat to be in such a warm and beautiful setting surrounded by family, and I managed to shoot off many photographs I'm pleasantly pleased with. I felt under the weather most of the day Tuesday while my family headed out to golf with my stepmother's friends who joined us for the holiday. But when I noticed the clouds beginning to light up with hints of crimson and pink from the balcony, I knew it was time to skedaddle down to the surf with my camera. The Caribbean Sea was so turbulent that day no one was allowed to go in the water, but a swimmer's nightmare can be a photographer's dream come true! If you want a good sunset picture, pray for big waves and big clouds. Just goes to show, everything has its dark and light side, it all depends on your particular vantage point... or the lens you choose to view the world through.

I spent close to an hour shooting at a very high ASA with shutter speeds as slow as a full second – all hand held. I've a steady hand, but also a penchant for experimenting with blurry images, which I'll be posting in the coming days.

I finished off my sandy walk-about standing alone on this miraculously deserted beach, which had been swarming with tourists only hours before. Did they not know this was the best time to be present on the crest of the sea, witnessing the clouds drain off all of their pigment as they surrendered to the black night? I slowly lifted one foot, and then the other, carefully embedding each into the fine white sand while breathing in tandem with the waves – paying close attention to the rush of seawater up across my ankles and the hurried rush back to the source of all things on this planet. It was as though every bubble exploding across my toes was celebration of the awareness of how content I am in my life right now – how grateful I am for this life no matter what my circumstances might be.

Life owes us nothing. We are given these brief moments to walk the earth – to embrace it, to love it – and when we do, the sky really does set itself ablaze with sparks of unconditional passion, inspiration, and gratitude.

May we all remember what a gift it is to be alive and aware of these precious moments, sharing the experience of walking this earth.
