A few months ago, my herbalist friend gave me a homemade Solomon's Seal tincture when she heard of my sprained ankle's stubborn refusal to heal. One week I'd be fine, but then I'd re-injure it and end up in the air cast again. I must admit, I was a bit suspicious when she said the root of this elegant plant had the power to help one's body tighten up sprained ligaments, but could also loosen overly tightened muscles as well. It seemed a bit potion-like and woo woo to me. But after 4 months of recurrent problems I was willing to try anything, and guess what? It worked! Perhaps it was just "time" for my body to heal, maybe you're thinking it was all in my head – all I can say is once I began taking Solomon's Seal every day, my ankle stopped arguing with me – or maybe I stopped arguing with my ankle. Indeed, some sort of "magic" took place as I aligned myself with nature's medicine. My awareness increased, and I was able to recognize how annoyed I'd become with my body's inability to mend. In turn, I was able to create a more positive and holistic role in it's healing.
I took these shots of Angela's very happy and thriving Solomon's Seal the day she uprooted it to transplant in the garden of her new home. How often does one have the opportunity to actually meet the plant that healed her? Isn't that just fantastic? Angela's gift does not simply lie in her knowledge of plants – her ability to listen and guide you to this place of physical and spiritual awareness that makes her such a talented healer.
I talked to her this morning just as she was heading out to plant her herbs in their new beds and wouldn't be surprised if she's pressing the soil around the roots of this one right now. I'm told that when a certain plant has a positive effect on your system it is said to become one's "ally" – a vegetative "friend" of sorts. I love this idea, because it implies relationship between the earth and human beings that is both healing and nurturing. So... meet my friend Solomon, the striking and handsome spirit of the woodlands who reached out to me in the midst of my pain and slowly began the internal work of healing me.
ps. my mom had foot surgery this morning, and it would be much appreciated if you would send some healing thoughts her way.
