Motherwort ~ Canon 30d

Mortherwort – sounds like the main staple in every Witch's cupboard, doesn't it? This particular plant was one of the healthiest I've ever seen. Standing almost as tall as me, it had doubled in size in my friend's garden over the course of just 3 weeks!

Motherwort derives its name for the many gynecological symptoms it is thought to remedy. A member of the mint family, it is used as a uterine tonic, and to prevent uterine infections. It can be used to reduce stomach gas, cramping, relieve menstrual discomfort, and is believed to regulate menstrual periods. This mothering herb's calming effect is well-known, which may be why it is also helpful in treating menopausal symptoms, anxiety and insomnia. Available through health food stores, it can be steeped as a tea with honey and ginger to subdue a somewhat strong taste, and the side effects, which may include stomach upset and sensitivity to the sun, are mild.

I thought the leaves were so lush and beautiful, I actually put them in a vase for a couple of days before using them. Green, sturdy and strong, motherwort is an apt metaphor for anyone looking for a strong support for the feminine within.

A beautiful photograph! I started out looking at your photographs for their beauty. Now, I am interested in the photographs and learning about the herbs. Thank you.

I like that name! Motherwort instead of worrywort... such opposites. Interesting to hear about all it can do.

I think you should compile a book of herbs with your photos and prose.

I love the pics of botanicals! Any good words of wisdom for herbs that relieve hot flashes? Good God, how can I BE this old???

And I adore the idea of a book combining your images with herbal lore and usage, etc. I'd buy it;-)
