We give thanks for the blessing of winter:
Season to cherish the heart.
To make warmth and quiet for the heart.
To make soups and broths for the heart.
To cook for the heart and read for the heart.
To curl up softly and nestle with the heart.
To sleep deeply and gently at one with the heart.
To dream with the heart.
To spend time with the heart.
A long, long time of peace with the heart.
We give thanks for the blessing of winter:
Season to cherish the heart.
Amen
~ Michael Leunig
I really like this one.

I saw the title of this in my reader and my first reaction was to think "Oh, I'll have to send you the "We give thanks for the blessings of winter" poem, only to open it and find it there in front of me.
I first found this in one of Leunig's books a girlfriend had some 15 years ago (15?? that's scary) and instantly loved it. Its memorised now but it still conjured a broad grin on my face to see it on your blog, like an old friend meeting a new friend.

This may be the first thing ever written to make me like winter. That, and a Sarah McLachlan song called "Song for a Winter's Night". Susan, the picture is just gorgeous as usual.

All animals should hibernate a bit, and that is what the winter does for us. Time, as Michael says, to cherish and know the heart better. Beautiful photo to go along with lovely thoughts.

I guess I'm the strange one here, being from Massachusetts and all. I have always loved winter and snow and ice and coldness. For me it is time of quieting down and coming home for a while. Light a fire to stay warm and make some hot chocolate and spend time with friends. I went to a restaurant in Cape Cod on winter and there was snow on the ground outside and there were just a few patrons there and the wait staff were so unhurried and just a relaxed and just plain happy to see us. We had such a great time. It makes me warm just thinking about it.
Peace.

What a lovely and true poem, Susan. Thank you so much for sharing it. It truly speaks to what my winter has been all about.
And the photo is a perfect match, as always.

Interesting how this poem's struck a nerve with more readers than usual. It feels as though the entry woke a few out of hibernation. It's why I said I really liked this one in the post.
I love winter immensely, and agree with Bob.... Cape Cod is the BEST off-season. It's just the relentless gray without any snow that gets to me from time to time. Thanks for your comments!
