Happy Birthday, Rob!

Woo hoo! Inflate the bagpipes! March to the beat of your own darn drummer, 'cuz today is my bestest friend's birthday!

When I visited Rob in October to cruise around Cape Cod, we had a companion with us everywhere we went. A very LOUD companion... his new set of bagpipes. With only what? 5 weeks of lessons under his belt, Rob marched down beaches, through forests, up Main Street, and around a pond while contorting his face into the personna of some sort of Celtic Dizzy Gillespie. No matter how on or off-tune he played (mostly on-tune... keep in mind, he's only a beginner) children came running from out of nowhere, people in distant dunes and from far away shores wandered, hands cupped to their ears, in search of the mysterious, cowboy-hatted piper of Cape Cod. Several reported hearing the haunting pipes made them wonder if an angel from heaven had arrived to call them home.

This, my friends, is the power of the pipes. Never underestimate their magically annoying yet mysteriously hypnotizing chant of melancholy ~ a mix of hope and woe. It's the most in-your-face instrument I've yet to personally encounter... definitely not the wall-flower among reed instruments. You gotta have hutzpah to stoke one of these babies up and let her go.. all beings everywhere, within a two mile circumference will hear the melodious cacophony, seeking out the source of powerful and seemingly endless sources of ancient droning.

tehehehe.

Happy Birthday, Rob. Yous is one of the weirdest people I's knows in the world, which is why I immediately knew we'd be forever friends. When you attack Main Street, the beach and/or the pond today, play a happy tune... and when the children come out of the woodwork and frolick behind you (which they always do) resist the temptation to lead them into the pond... they're the best audience you have.

hugs, Susan

They're meant to be in-your-face: those are war pipes, for marching soldiers. Fine silhouette image, lots of character.
