Water Fire

Providencers sets their rivers ablaze several times each Autumn, naming the repeat event "Water Fire". One hundrend bonfires are ignited just after sunset, filling the city with the aroma of campfire smoke and crackling firelight sparkling across the water. The fires are so hot you can feel the heat from the shores ~ something that wasn't all that welcome considering the unseasonably high temps that weekend. It was cool to see, but what could have been a totally awesome experience was somewhat ruined by the huge mass of people that showed up see the last incarnation of the season. Nonetheless, it was interesting I got a few nice pics out of the deal.

The dude in the top pics is some sort of samurai flame warrior who arrives on a gondola to light the first pylons with his blazing sword, while mystical music ranging from ethereal trance pieces to serious opera echo through the city.

I'll be posting two more shots from the evening. I was verrry tired by the time the thing started and wasn't feeling very well after the insane work week I'd just experienced. My friend, Rob was more disappointed with the event than I was. He attended last year when it was seasonally cold outside and with only 1/3 of the crowd. He kept saying, "Oh man! The crowd is ruining this!" Which, I'd have to agree, was sort of the case ~ after only a half hour we headed back to the car and took off in search of waves and sand.

I would have to say your 1/2 hour of fighting the crowds were worth that bottom photograph. I love it.

Know what you mean. We stay away from many events because of the parking problem and crush of people. The photos are awesome. KC had a simular event on the Plaza earlier and it was way too hot here as well. Say hi to Rob.

Winter and Fall in Cape Cod are better than the summer. It is so peaceful and serene. Put on some warm clothes and walk the beach and enjoy. I get excited just thinking about it. I think I will have to do that again. I'm glad you are having so much fun!
