The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don't flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on the brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
~ Galway Kinnell, from the poem, St. Francis and the Sow
Don't forget how lovely you are. Wake up. Remember. Recall your natural state which is radiant goodness! Who will retell the tale? Who will reteach the lesson of your inner beauty? Who will entice the bud to blossom? Put a hand upon your own brow ~ begin anew ~ begin by blessing yourself this day ~ every day.
You need to trust yourself. Instead of letting the outside world tell you how to live, what to value, and what to fear, you must listen more deeply to your heart of hearts.
~ Lama Surya Das
Always, always, always ~ begin with yourself.

I've just recently found your blog and am really enjoying my visits here. Your photography is quite eye-catching but it is today's quote that draws me in to de-lurk. I see it is my Lama Surya Das - do you remember which of his books it came from?

Hey Jules!
Our amazing American Lama's name above links to his website which is now featuring his most recent book, Buddha is as Buddha Does, which is where the quote you inquired about is from. I met him just last week, and he is an incredibly interesting and wise man.
I hope you pick up the book ~ it is very straight forward ~ covering the basics of Buddhism in a way that even a seasoned practicioner can benefit from. Surya Das is known for his interest and commitment to interfaith dialog as well!
Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for your very kind words about my work. You blessed me today!
