He who thinks he knows, doesn't know. He who knows that he doesn't know, knows.
~ Joseph Campbell

That quote reminds me of something my English teacher told me when I was in highschool. I have no idea where she heard it, but I've always thought it was pretty true:
Freshman don't know and they don't know they don't know.
Sophomores don't know and they know they don't know.
Juniors know, but they don't know that they know.
Seniors know and they know that they know.

Did JC appear overly self-confident when he made this statement?

Darius,
When Joseph Campbell made this quote, he most likely was describing a specific culture's approach to finding the definition/meaning of life. I highly recommend watching the PBS/Bill Moyer's interviews of Joseph Campbell for a better idea of what this scholar of comparative religion was like, and his storyteller's approach to the subject matter. He said many things with a twinkle in his eye and perhaps an occasional tongue in his cheek.
As for JC being arrogant in making the statement above, I have to laugh just a tiny bit. It is a supreme arrogance for anyone to think they know a the ultimate truth about anything. To suppose such a thing is to declare oneself god... to push god aside and take their own place on the throne of "all-knowing". In my humble opinion, this is a dangerous misinterpretation of the bible... to think following Jesus makes one supremely more enlightened or "right" than their fellow man. It would be wrong of a hindu, buddhist or muslim to assume this as well. The fact that followers of all religions do this could be a big reason why we're in the mess we are in right now.

I have to laugh at this one...my dad was fond of saying: "those of you who think you know everything just annoy those of us who DO"! Hee hee:)
I've been reading through the "back issues" of your blog...man you got folks stirred up while I was away. Good for you;)
