Where Jesus Golfs

Enter, Rest & Tee Off ~ I think that's what it says behind the branches.

Actually, this is where my mom and stepfather attend services in Kansas City. The neighborhood where the church is located is called "Country Club" and has nothing to do with an elitist golf course. I can't help myself ~ every time I go there I have this image in my mind's eye of Jesus speeding down a fairway in a motorized golf cart... swinging a 9 iron and getting a hole-in-one every single time.

~ I better quit while I'm ahead, shouldn't I?

All kidding aside, the church is really a good place. As far as I can tell, the place is filled with thinking christians – which isn't necessarily an oxymoron – and they are working toward an inclusive congregation where all are welcome, no matter what your politics, race, marital status or lifestyle might be. In my opinion, this shouldn't seem so amazing, but with the current fundamentalist upswing in our country, it's sadly uncommon ~ or at least it seems that way.

There's a killer stained glass window in the back of the church depicting Cecilia, the patron saint of music, which I found to be pretty surprising since the church isn't Catholic. It's just like I said ~ everyone is welcome at Country Club Christian Church. You might sit next to a single woman, a gay man, a democrat, or a catholic saint even!

Here's St. Cecilia, and a close-up of one the angels that stand on either side of her. Stunning, aren't they?

Those are great windows! They look really well done. Do you know how old they are? ;-)

Wow. I really appreciate and love high-quality stained glass. These are amazing. I get bugged that angels and everybody are usually white in these church artworks, but oh well. I have a long way to go still, in training the entire world to think as I do.

yeah, we all have a long way to go, that's for sure. I think the National Cathedral has some non-caucasians in their windows. Next time I go there, I'll keep a look out.

damn, at least they're honest, most churches are really just country clubs parading as churches!

Thanks for your evluation of Country Club Christian. I hope we can live up to it.

Yor're right about the races of the figures in the windows, but in the 1920's most of us didn't have the insight into such things as most of us do today.

My greatest disappointmnet with the church is that it doesn't have greater ethnic/racial diversity.
