My mom, a spooky staunch Republican, was a bit concerned about my week-long immersion in Democrat propaganda philosophy while in Chicago. Today I received a letter from her in the mail containing pics of my second cousin's wedding, a newsclipping about women who die while wearing the birth control patch (you aren't wearing these are you?), and a quick note advising me not to believe all the useless drivel that must have oozed out of Ted Kennedy during his speech at the convention. (Of course, she was completely serious joking.)
:-) ... and I am being an obnoxious charming tease.
I'm tempted to say that I was completely brainwashed and have been lured over to the smart side dark side after my AFL-CIO gig, but it just wouldn't be true ~ I'm a single, never-married woman, AND I'm an artist, which puts me in the category of "highly suspicious and dangerous" no matter what your political leanings are. I felt pretty out of place during the endless buzz-talk of "working families" during the convention. I am not a union member ~ I am a freelancer ~ and although I do not have a family of my own, I assure you, I work very hard. I look at the political playing field and wonder where the hell my representation is. I also live in DC, which equates to high taxation with absolutely no representation in congress. This just sucks. (Can I say that on my blog? ... I think I just gave myself permission.)
To the Republican majority in the family, you can rest assured that I, the minority, am a flaming moderate hippee tree-hugging liberal who pretty much hates is annoyed by most politicians. I admire Barack Obama, but wouldn't be surprised if the system chews him up and spits him out just like the rest of them. I am cynical hopeful about the future, but President Bush has done nothing but increase my insecure feelings about said future. His close association with Mega Church Evangelicals wigs me out... especially since someone who claims to be so spiritual thinks death & destruction is a viable option. Our forefathers wanted ~ THIRSTED for our democracy, and it isn't something we can bomb into another culture or dictate. The question was posed on tv this morning: "Will the US be successful in starting a democracy in Iraq?" How can we presume to be able to do such a thing? Imposing democracy in such a complex culture that pretty much hates us?
I'd much rather have a smarter moderate atheist in the white house. Sincerely, I would. One who doesn't preach his moral position on abortion, while setting a war into action that kills tens of thousands of innocent civilians, including women and unborn children. When we say all life is sacred, what do we actually mean by that? What of the sacredness of our soldiers' lives? I don't think we're the shining city on the hill that Reagan waxed poetically about, at least not any more. On the contrary, we are increasingly becoming a nation of hypocrites ~ both democrat and republican.
But maybe that's just me, and this all just Visual-Voice propaganda...?
If you hit my site regularly, you know I don't dive into politics very often. I'm not an expert, and I've created this blog to be a place where I focus on beauty and the uplifting. In a way, speaking your mind without caring what anyone thinks can be a beautiful and uplifting thing... at least to me at this moment, it sure feels that way. Standing up and speaking from the heart is should be one of the most patriotic things an American can do, but I get the sense that many like me are afraid to do just that, for fear of being labeled a crazy liberal. Labels don't work for me anymore, because the labels don't fit. I'd rather be considered a situationalist ~ weighing each issue separately with as much wisdom as my heart and mind can muster.
Personally, I think if we have to have an idiot in the white house, we might as well elect someone like Forest Gump. He may have been stupid, but at least he was wise. He understood commitment and fairness, served his time in the army with honor, and don't you agree, was smarter than the dolts on capitol hill?
"Stupid is as stupid does ~ that's what my mamma used to say." ... politicians decidedly aren't like a box of chocolates ~ you always know what you're gonna get.
(nope... didn't buy all the democratic propaganda... although I may have just earned a spot on homeland security's Suspicious People Who Must Be Watched list. I'd like to note that I passed this entry to my mom before posting it. One of my cardinal rules of blogging is: do no harm... especially to beloved family members. She thinks this post is just scary! wonderful!)

So glad to see you spread your (talons) wings and (rant) discuss our current (ablolutely egregious) difficult political situation.
Very well put.
You ain't no danger to me...

Salt Lake City? I figured I'd be tarred and feathered if I lived there. It's good to rant from time to time... I was suffering from Input Overload after my trip ~

You sound more sensible than all the political rhetoric combined. Great post. I think it's good when the non-politically-ranting types speak out with their opinions now and then. It's very healthy for all concerned. By the way, I totally love that graceful, gorgeous non-Ashcroft sculpture you posted.
