Symbols of American culture ~ then and now.

The Chicago Art Institute is most famous for American Gothic, the iconographic painting by Grant Wood (1930) of a farmer standing with his pitchfork next to his spinster daughter. It was inspired by the American Gothic style of painting... thus the title. For some reason, I find the midwestern mother and her kids iconographic too ~

Most famous for American Gothic? But there are so many other fabulous paintings there! It's a world-class art museum! ;)

It was 104 degrees yesterday in Chicago. That's not heat index, that's actual friggin' temperature. (pant pant) :( But it's only 95 degrees today; that's practically Arctic! Hope you don't work too hard this week Susan...

G .. I didn't say American Gothic was the best image in the gallery... but it is one of the most famous American paintings, and (arguably) the best-known painting in the gallery. Not to worry... other paintings are to follow... I spent Sunday in the Park with George, and was blown away by the Paul Klee collection. My favorite by far is the Van Gogh painting of his apartment in Arles.
