I've been in Kansas City on business for the past week. I used to live here, so I'm having a blast going to all my favorite antique and book stores with my mom and stepfather. The crusty proprietor of Spivey's chain smokes cigars all day surrounded by piles of books, maps, antique photos and artwork... The best part is visiting with the two dogs and a cat who seem to really run the place. If you're ever in KC... don't pass this place up!

Here's my mom and chuck browsing through old books.

Proof of where the cigar smoke came from... cough, hack... what ambiance!

The Spivey Book Doggie #1... yes, those are original Wizard of Oz books in the case above him... drool, drool, drool!

The Spivey Book Cat, lounging in the Map Room.

My kind of Heaven ~ a melange between an used bookstore and a homey cafe with swirling smells of freshly ground coffee beans.
Thanks for sharing these delightful shots of ordinary life.

If a used bookstore doesn't have cats or dogs too, it's just not living up to its full potential.. ;-)

I just visited a local frame shop/gallery with a 'dog in residence'; she added to the place nicely!

I would love Spivey's, too. I always feel at home if there's a friendly animal around (4-legged). The funniest animal-in-a-shop experience I ever had was once when a friend and I wandered into a teeny=tiny antique store, so small you have to turn sideways. We both noticed an extremely large oddly shaped object , taking up maybe 1/8 of the space in the room, which I thought may have been a table with an old sheepskin thrown over it . Then it moved, struggled to its huge feet, and clumbered over to say hello and to get a rub. I was laughing so hard I practically sat on the dog . . . for that's what it was, an enormous very furry very friendly dog.
Glad you're around, still making me laugh and cry! Nola
