White Tails

I ventured out to the Chesapeake Bay with a good friend last weekend. Although it rained practically non-stop the entire time and was severely overcast we managed to eek out a number of reasonably good shots which I'll share with you over the coming days. The B&B we were staying at didn't allow check-in until 5pm on Easter Sunday, so we drove out to a wildlife refuge just outside little town of Easton, Maryland.

We spotted these deer while driving past an open field so I carefully hung a u-turn and every so slowly crept the MINI Cooper down the dirt path at oh, about 1/2 mile per hour. The mama deer in the center was incredibly curious. I don't think she'd ever seen a red & white MINI before. She was absolutely spellbound as I snapped off several shots. Actually, we were ALL spellbound.

After a couple of minutes the mother deer decided she'd seen enough of us and frolicked away, her white tail popping into the air like a white flag as she darted and then disappeared into the shadowy forest.

This was one of only two images that were in focus. It was so dark out and the lens was so long that I had a hard time stablizing the lens. As a rule of thumb, when you get an opportunity like this you hold your breath, say a Hail Mary, and shoot like crazy.

Thank you for the beautiful picture. It reminds me of those times in life when I find myself caught in the headlights.
