This is a detail from the painting in the Chapel of Joseph of Arimathea inside the National Cathedral. I'm pretty sure it's a fresco... painted directly on the wall and is covered with so much gold paint that it glows.

I have a curious attraction to some of the lesser characters in the life stories of Jesus. You know, the ones that regular people don't know about.
Joseph of Arimathea, though many people know that name from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
Nicodemus, Simon of Cyrene, Pilate's wife, Simeon and Anna, the man who said, "I believe...help my unbelief!" (a personal hero of mine) and so on.
Just regular folks who bumped up against something bigger than themselves and did the best they could with it. Just people like me.

I am a member of the National Cathedral Association and fly to DC to see the cathedral at least once a year. Joseph of Arimathea chapel is in the crypt of the cathedral - right at the crossing -the mural is a painting on plaster in tempra over gold leaf. Though I have seen the painting many times, your close up detail vivid color photo was most inspiring. Thanks much for your web site.

Plater in tempra over gold leaf! That sounds way more exotic than "fresco" to me. Thanks for the information!
