Election Night Prayer

November 02, 2004

God, what in the world is our country doing?

As I've watched the election results come in, I keep thinking about something my mother, an 8th grade civics teacher, said to me years ago, "A nation usually gets the leader it deserves."

This idea makes me uneasy.

Do we deserve George Bush? Or, for that matter, do we deserve Kerry? Are these the BEST men we can come up with? Or... are we collectively too angry, afraid and out of touch to actually stop and THINK about where our country is going? I hope more than anything that the man who is elected is the best man for the job, and above all, that the best man is someone our country deserves.

In the end, what we love is what we pay attention to. Please God, help us to pay more attention to our political system, our policy, our neighbors, and the world.

Amen.

ps... and PLEASE don't let Bush get elected.
